The Flaming Lips

The Flaming Lips were formed in 1983 by Wayne Coyne, his brother Mark, Michael Ivins, and Richard English. Mark later left, with Wayne taking over vocal duties and becoming the primary songwriter. The band's name originated from a high school rumor about a girl contracting herpes, which the Coyne brothers found amusing. Known for their theatrical live performances, Wayne often descends from an alien mother ship, floats across the audience in a bubble, and pours fake blood on himself. Their shows feature confetti cannons, lasers,
and dancers, creating psychedelic experiences that have become their trademark.

Wayne's Artistic Journey

Wayne Coyne has consistently pushed the boundaries of artistic experimentation. In 1996 and 1997, he developed "The Parking Lot Experiments," creating a surround sound experience with forty tapes played simultaneously in forty cars, inspiring the album Zaireeka. In 2010, at a New Year's Eve event in Oklahoma City, Coyne synchronized cell phone alarms among the audience, resulting in a unique sonic experience. He also created a screen print using his own blood to commemorate The Flaming Lips' performance at the Austin City Limits Music Festival. In February 2017, Coyne debuted "Works by Wayne Coyne" at the Waterloo Center for the Arts, featuring The
King's Mouth
, a 14-minute light installation, showcasing his innovative artistic vision.
